Mouth Cancer Awareness

Hillbrook Dental

The team was recently involved in an article publish on BDA connect. Below you may find an excerpt from the article. The full text can be found here.

Hillbrook Dental Health Centre in Birmingham is a combined NHS and private dental practice offering a wide range of treatments. The practice is located in a multicultural community and treats patients from many different backgrounds. The team consists of five dentists, a foundation dentist, a hygienist, a nurse and three reception staff. The practice have been members of BDA Good Practice for eight years.

What have you done to get involved in Mouth Cancer Action Month?
Our team has got involved with the fantastic #bluelipselfie campaign! To raise awareness in our community we have visited local care homes and given the residents free oral health checks and advised them on how to take better care of their mouth. We created a food hamper for one of the homes we visited, and the residents really enjoyed having our team there!

To raise awareness in our practice we have displayed various posters in our waiting area and have our #bluelipselfie on show for all to see.

How have your patients responded to what the practice is doing/has done to raise mouth cancer awareness?
Our patients have responded positively to the various activities we have undertaken, which is great to see! Some patients have enquired at the desk for more information and others have spoken to the dentist. We’ve asked all of our patients to leave comments about what they already know about mouth cancer and whether they’d like to know more about it. We will review the comments book in our next practice meeting at the end of November.

As we have a patient participation group, we are going to use the opportunity to raise the issue of mouth cancer during the next meeting. We hope to identify further activity we can undertake to raise awareness of mouth cancer detection and prevention as it’s crucial to keep patients educated and informed. We care for all of our patients and always ensure that we provide a good, professional and helpful service.
